Will the I-Phone Change Everything?Kreines & Kreines, Inc. has a client who fervently believes that the new I-Phone from Apple will result in everyone being connected wirelessly. PlanWireless is not so sure that a price point of $500 to $600 will be universally embraced, particularly when the user fees are factored in. But here’s the important point: while public safety officials are still grappling with the issue of interoperability, along comes Steve Jobs with a handheld device that floats seamlessly between WiFi, Cingular, TV, MP3 and whatever else you can get wirelessly. If Steve Jobs is betting that people want to do this, he’s probably right. So, where do you think the signal will come from? Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California? The Empire State building? A WiFi node (Cingular won’t work there)? A WiMAX antenna (possible, but still years away) in your neighborhood? A little box on a telephone pole in the right-of-way (probably, which is what this issue of PlanWireless is all about)? |
